In Bali, some places seem made for photographers: easily accessible, with cliffs and palm trees. The light plays on the water here like nowhere else. But sometimes it’s different: shooting turns into a real challenge – trails, thickets, unexpected encounters with bold monkeys who decide that your lens cap or glasses are accessories they desperately need.
BUT! The ocean doesn’t wait until it’s convenient for you. Rain, wind, merciless sun. It doesn’t matter. You check the tides, wind, wave strength – and still nature decides on its own, and you can only accept everything. And yet… when everything aligns – the wave, light, angle, surfer – it’s pure magic.
Most often, this happens not when you planned it. But when you were almost ready to leave.
How to Capture the Spirit of Surfing in Bali Through the Lens
That day was unbearably hot – the sun seemed to press you to the ground from your first steps on the sand. I got lucky: there was a small warung nearby with ice-cold coconuts – a sip of salvation before returning to shooting.
From the shore, surfers’ conversations were already drifting – calm but focused. They discussed the shape and direction of the approaching waves. I listened. Watched where they pointed, where they swam. And at some point, I realised: something interesting was about to happen.
As the sun moved closer to the horizon, the waves became more expressive. Clean and powerful walls that curled into perfect tubes – they came with force and grace. It was incredible!
